Health Promotion Board: 150 minutes of exercise every week

The Health Promotion Board, in its effort to get Singaporeans working out and staying fit has launched a campaign recommending Singaporeans to clock in 150 minutes a week on exercises. I noted that the recommended exercises can take the form of informal exercises like stair-climbing.

It is a hot day today. I drink barley after learning that barley is a gem of a medical food from a TV show I watched in the afternoon. Nature has given man plenty of gem of a food to combat all diseases but man makes artifical chemical food which is not good for health.

Hitting the Gym

I hit the gym on a weekly basis to shape up my muscles. I am a newcomer to gym but after the few sessions, I am quite addicted to working out. Though I am a newcomer to working out, I do not want to engage a fitness instructor despites being targeted by them. Actually the gym equipment is not too hard to use, it takes just some time and one should be able to use the equipment easily.

Energy

I have grown older. Coming home everyday after looking at the computer for hours during work has sapped my energy. I am no longer young. I have postponed my jogging session for many times already. Sometimes, I wish I could be more wealthy so that I can give more to my family.

Gym workouts are not really for me

I made my maiden trip to a gym yesterday afternoon, with my wife in a bid to shape up. I was taken surprise by a instructor there when he asked me why it was only now then I started to go to visit a gym. His question made me feel that not going to a gym is a sin, but ultimately, I understand that there are many area of focuses in life. For some people, they like to do and excel in a field and have garnered good knowledge and experience in that field. For others, they like to do and excel in other fields.

Radiation risks

The current hot issue widely debated among Singaporeans is whether the radioactive leakage from the exploded nuclear plants in Japan will affect Singapore. Though the authorities here have assured the local populace that their worries are unfounded, many have still taken precautions to arm themselves with protective devices against radiation. Many are also not convinced.

Seeking Health

Last Friday, I jogged like I have never jogged before, for months. I jogged for an hour via park connectors which brought me to places I have never been before! I must hail the National Park Board for its excellent web of park connectors which allows me to enjoy nature, explore Singapore while keeping fit at the same time!

In the past weeks, Singapore has lost 2 outstanding leaders in their own rights, Madam Kwa Geok Choo and Dr Balaji due to diseases and cancer. Coincidentally, during these weeks, I have friends or friends’ friends lose their family member due to cancer.

These days, in the market, there exists a myriad of choices when it comes to bottled water: we have mineral water, distilled water and pure drinking water from all brands, local or international.


For most of the days, I boil tap water for my own consumption, buying and drinking these bottled mineral water when I am outside and my water bottle has become empty.

Food and Health

These days, I have been choosing my food for consumption very carefully. We often heard of the saying “We are what we eat” and how true this saying goes! Besides regular exercise, a good diet as well as a nutritious and wholesome meal will make us healthy and as fit as a fiddle.


I have been troubled by the increasing phenomenon of hair loss in our society. I, too, am also a sufferer of hair loss. Why is there such a rapid increase of hair loss sufferers in our society? Notwithstanding stress, I believe another reason would be due to the food we consume.

The food sold in our hawker centres, though appetizing, is not really healthy. There is also a generous dose of salt, preservative, MSG added to enhance their flavours.

I try to eschew those food described above and opt for fruits and vegetables. But these days, fruits and vegetables also seem to be genetically modified, which may possess a health risk too.

Riding the increasing ‘health-centric’ bandwagon of consumers today, there is now an increasing fad towards organic food which is quite expensive but touted to be healthier. There is now organic food, organic shampoo, organic cosmetics and in the future, there may be organic mobile phone (to reassure phone users of the radiation risk) as well as organic computers.

Fruits, Vegetables and Exercises

I know all of us are encouraged to consume 2 servings of fruits and vegetables, as so advised by the Health Promotion Board for better Health. I also know that we are strongly encouraged to exercise 2 to 3 times per week for healthier bodies. I know these facts but like many, putting them into practice can be really a challenge.

With the busy hectic lifestyles we lead, in the office, we would normally just gobble down all the MSG-laden noodles and rice and snack up on unhealthy snacks hurrily. There are definitely some fruits for sale at the many cafes, coffeeshops but I do not consume them; the reason being that these cut fruits are often sold at such a mark-up from the prices sold at the markets and secondly have being cut and exposed to the surroundings for hours, how much of the original vitamin content can be retained?

I have brought some fruits before to the office. However, it is rather challenging to eat them in the office when it is always so busy at work. In the past, I tend to gnaw on apples with the skin on, as health experts have told us that the skin contains great nutrients for health. However with the increased use of pesticides, it is now a tad dangerous to be eating apples this way, lock, stock and barrel. If you bring a shaver to shave off the skin, you will be eating away some time from work just to do that and it can be hardly excusable if you have a hectic work schedule.

To embrace healthy living, we need to exercise. However with the many hours committed at work, we come back home, tired and still have to deal with our own personal affairs, as a result, many become couch potatoes the moment they return home...staying glued to the TV.

It really takes discipline to find time to eat that two fruits and two servings of vegetables a day and exercise for at least 20 min for a minimum of 3 times per week. I am still faring okay.. having some exercises here and there, popping a muli-vitamin (as a substitute for fruits).....

Singapore Osteoporosis



Dear Singapore Readers, how are you feeling? Enjoyed your long weekends? For me, this long weekend is neither too long nor too short and I could said that I have spent my time very wisely, reading up, doing self improvement and discovering more about my health!

Yup, yesterday, outside Sheng Siong Supermarket in Bedok, I did those free Bone Mass tests by Anlene milk company and guess what, my bones are not that strong!

I was a tad worried and hence gave the Anlene promoters business as I bought a medium packet of Anlene milk powder to bone up on my bones (no pun intended). Anlene milk powder contains a wealth of calcium to promote stronger bones! Wow Anlene must be happy that I am giving them free publicity on this blog of mine!

Anyway, bone problems are hardly noticed by many as the cracking and deteoriation of bones develop silently and insidiously in our bodies and when we crack our bones one day, it is often too late already!

Our bones are not that solid and strong as what we have perceived them to be. Bones are living tissues and the growth and depletion of these bone tissues are always ongoing. Thus one must really have a rich calcium-rich diet to strengthen our bones so that the absorption rate of bone mass will surpass the bone depletion rate.

Osteoporosis is often a remote term to many Singaporeans. One can easily understand Osteorporosis if one visualise termites as the Osteoporosis and wood as our bones. When the termites attack a wood, the interior of the wood is eaten up, leaving a seemingly strong facade of the wood outside. One day, if you just press lightly on this wood, you will be surprised that it will just crumble easily, revealing the hollow interior of the wood....just like our bones, if we do not take care of them, this scenario may similarly play out....
